Copywriting. It just sounds kinda cool, doesn’t it? “I’m a copywriter”.
That statement is almost always followed by, “Oh, what is that?”
Well, lemme tell ya.
Copywriting is the art and science of crafting words (whether written or spoken) that get people to take some form of action.
That sounds a little too scientific. So let’s get a little simpler. I write things that people read. I want them to take an action. To do something.
Usually, that form of action includes some form of selling. Whether clicking a “Buy Now” button, inputting their information into a form, or picking up the phone and calling.
Done correctly, copywriting can make the difference between your product or service getting traction in the market or languishing in obscurity.
The Art and Science of Selling With Words
I imagine that the art and science of copywriting has been around since someone first started chiseling words on a stone.
Caveman #1 probably wanted Caveman #2 to buy the tusks of the saber-toothed tiger he just killed, so he hammered out a little message to tell him how great those tusks were.
OK, maybe not, but you get the idea. Copywriting has been around for a long time. And done properly, it can be used to sell a lot of stuff. Not junk, though, mind you.
I’m not interested in putting lipstick all over your pig and telling the world how beautiful it is.
But if you have a product that I can get behind, believe in, and has real value to someone, watch out. It’s gonna sell.
Anyway, that’s my take on what it is that I do.
